OK. Just wtf, this is really disturbing. These little girls, named Lea, Prune, and Thylane were photographed for Vogue Paris and clearly, they're really young (say.....6-8?) and something about this that is kind of wrong..... I mean they're playing dress-up, what little girl hasn't? I'm not going to lie, they look freaking fierce. They're not showing any skin really either so it's not like they're whorish in any way. It's kinda cute and cheeky but it makes me squirm. Maybe I'm just a prude, but I think kids should look like kids, not mini-models or adults. I guess it's meant to be controversial and help us question what 'appropriateness is.' Young models have faces just like these girls, but with 'adult' sized bodies (i say 'adult' because that's quite debatable), and are often found in similar editorials in terms of posing and aesthetic, but somehow, its OK for them to do so just because they're maybe 16+. I mean they still look like little girls....so why isn't it right for actual little girls to do the same? I don't know.....

It really reminds me of this:

Creepy pageant girls freaking scare me (What's more terrifying however, are the parents :S:S:S wouldn't wanna mess with one of those bitchez). Obviously these girls aren't styled as well and are WAY more fake/spray tanned/face toothed, but there are some similarities.

Anyways, It's really late so I gotta go to bed, but please feel free to leave any of your thoughts or opinions or reactions to those photos.

A Tribe Called Galembo

These amazing photographs are by Phyllis Galembo from her series called 'West African Masquerade". The bold earthy tones paired with the bold, but still somehow earthy, colours is just a winning combination for me! By bold (yet earthy), I mean that I can see all of those colours coming from vegetation, bugz, and other natural compounds. The prints, wicker/basket-esque clothes, and shaggy-mop/fringe give it such a raw feeling. The tribal costumes and the leaves/hay, vines, and sticks incorporated into them gives a kind of nature-tribal-mystic kind of vibe that I'm really into at the moment. I'm also really loving the awkward stark poses of the models; it really adds to the seriouz mystic/shaman feeling and ya know...juxtaposition n' shit.

Hey y'all, just got back from a verrrrrryyy short trip to NYC! Twas fun and very exhausting and kind of really scary at times cause we got caught in the most lovely of snowstorms on boxing day (please note this images and video)

Before the snow, I went to the MoMa and wandered around for a couple of hours. The onLINE exhibit on the 6th floor was by far my favourite but unfortunately, I couldn't be super touristy and take pictures of the artwork (or me with the artwork ahahaha) but to sum it up, all I can really say is 'just lots of linezzz' and it was amazing! There were typical examples like Sol LeWitt's cuby sculptures, Mondrian's paintings, but there were some really cool other examples:

so pretty right? She looks like a tornado most of the time.

There was this other really great video with the artist (awoman named...louie? I can't remember D: ) and she's just chilling at a table. She's playing with a long piece of string and making different patterns and it goes on for like 5 minutes. Theres another reallllly cool part where she has a silver marble, and she pushes it across the table, and I guess it isn't quite level because the marble rolls slowly all over the table and she traces the path of the marble with her hand simultaneously on the side. The final video (from what I remember) is her and 4 pieces of paper. They are all layed out side by side with gaps in between and she pushes them together slowly, so that it becomes one long sheet of paper and she continues to do this until the paper starts to move vertically upward in the center of the 4 sheets. I know, I've done a terrrible job at helping you visualize it but it's really quite amazing!

I love how mellow-dramatic it is! Each still is so mundane and the text really changes the context of the image.

Basically, the artists wanted to strip away the exterior of the New York Times Tower to its skeleton and to mount 2 huge @ss jumbotron screens at the very top. They were inspired by Duchamp's "The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors" and the concept of ready-mades.

Just a quick post before i return to being a lazy slob. I've recently really gotten into Alicia Silverstone's work aka my childhood favs: Braceface (a canadian show from the early 2000s) and Clueless. I just love her slightly irritating squeals but I think her girl-next-door appeal is so refreshing at the moment. I'm so sick of obnoxious films (like BURLESQUE or worse... TWILIGHT) that are so... 'serious' and re-watching Braceface and Clueless was a great pick me up. She's just the cutest thing ever and it's a shame that she's so underrated.

Sarah's really domin8ing so I felt the need to post something.... (lol?) These are a few songs that I've really been playing on repeat too much lately. I'm not usually an 80s kind of guy, but I really don't know what's come over me :S But of course, I'm always digging 'Madame Butterfly' (it's one of my top played songs on itunes). I just never get sick of good ol' Cio-Cio San. I just recently game across 'giving up' which is a cover of the original by Gladys Knight and the Pips, and the nasally voice really reminds me of a friend for some reason haha. Anyways, enjoy! One of the recurring looks this year that I am absolutely crazy about is witchcraft and the occult. It's interesting how Vogue Paris was able to predict this trend in their September 2007 issue with their "Sacrément Inspirée" editorial shot by Terry Richardson, as seen above. We've seen the occult look this year, however, in McQueen's SS2o11 collection that was inspired by paganism and being "reclaimed by nature". It may also be noted that I would give my left arm to own ANYTHING from Pamela Love's eerie 2010 Autumn Winter Collection, which of course consists of crosses, daggers, sacred hearts and overall witchy accessories.

My obsession with Wicca, however, really stems from "The Craft". You've probably seen this film, it's basically Mean Girls but with teenage witches casting spells instead of having 3 way calling attacks. This film not only indulges in gothic jewellery, séances, and a fuckload of black clothing and dark lipstick, but it also combines my love of 90's fashion with long floral skirts, leather jackets, school uniforms... and a fuckload of black clothing and dark lipstick. And the film itself is great!

Aganetha Dyck

Aganetha Dyck is a Winnipeg artist who works with bees to create beautiful bee-art. She places objects inside of beehives and the bees cover them with honeycombs. It's actually quite eerie...the objects turn out quite grotesque looking sometimes (especially the shoes) but at other times, it's quite ethereal. The first 4 images are actually scans of the bees, and the result is just a bunch of textures that end up looking quite dramatic. Is it weird that I heard about her from my textiles prof? Anyways, hope you enjoyed the pictures! If you have the time, you should definitely check out her website!

Tonight I was looking through all of my old film photos and they made me feel so nostalgic for the good ol' days of when I took photography in school. I realize that I haven't picked up my camera in months because I haven't been motivated enough, not to mention there is a pile of rolls sitting in my room that need to be developed before I can snap any more. (And that shit can get priceh$$$) Looking at these photos, however, were just the inspiration I needed to start shooting again.

I thought I'd share some of my favourites with you. Bare in mind that these photos are in no way cohesive with each other. They are from various events in the past 4 years such as my trip to California, around Toronto, wintertime, summertime, friends, photography projects etc.

Life Coat is a project by Jet Korine, an Icelandic designer. These coats are designed specifically to last a human lifetime. They are hand sewn and dyed (using insect and plant elements), and I just think it's such a simple and lovely concept (I want one!!!!!!). The geometric prints are so subtle and beautiful and they just look so comfy and slouchy and I'm always super schleppy so I naturally gravitate towards this kind of thing. These remind me of Wunderkind's fall 2010 collection (below):

I don't get to write on here anymore, mainly because I never have anything interesting to say. Atleast Oz can quip about the latest runway shows since he studies fashion and is therefore always in the know. I, on the other hand, can never find the time to browse every single show and keep up with the latest fads (zomg circle scarves + army jackets + neutral colours + brogue boots etc etc!!!) That's a lie; I can find the time, only I'd rather spend that time watching really bad television and/or pretending to keep up with my schoolwork.

Speaking of school, you've already heard what Oz is studying, and I'm studying humanities at University of Toronto. I'm also taking this visual studies course where we study art history this term and do in-studio work next term. Today we were looking at Hugo Ball (one of the leading artists of Dada) and I actually don't remember studying him at all in high school, but my prof showed us a photo of when he recited his famous 1916 poem, "Karawane", which goes something like this and looks something like this:

Oh hai dere! Haven't posted in quite a bit, but that's somewhat expected now...(right?) anyways a lot has been goin' on with us in the past month and a bit, mainly university!!! And let me tell you, I've had to shaft myself (not an innuendo) more than usual and lets just say I can still feel the buzzing from sewing for 7+ hours today. And it's not because what I'm doing is hard...I'm just incredibly slow and I'm kind of a perfectionist so that slows me down. ANYwAYS. Oh ya forgot to mention, I'm studying fashion design wooooo! It ain't no CSM but it's a start.

So for one of our first assignments, we got to interview Canadian industry professionals, and I got to interview the lovely Joyce Gunhouse from Comrags. For those outside of Canada, Comrags is a Toronto based design duo Judy Cornish and Joyce Gunhouse. Well Judy, unfortunately, wasn't able to attend our interview because she was busy making patterns in their studio (did I mention I got to wander around their studio because I totally ran past Joyce on the street because I didn't realize it was her because she was wearing shades, and that story doesn't make sense but that's how it happened).

Well I learned quite a bit during that hour, including random facts like: They taught Todd Lynn, Joeffer Caoc, and I think David Dixon (please don't quote me on this, I have a terrible memory). Also, the Caten twins used to dye Joyce's hair (pre-international designers). I'm not sure if I'm allowed to 'divulge' any more from the interview since it was for school, but I thought it was pretty sick for a first assignment.

OOH MA GAW!!!!! Alexander McQueen was just spectacular! Sarah Burton really knows McQueen better than anyone, and I'm especially loving the frothy gradient dress.

Other shows that were memorable for me were Viktor and Rolf, Balenciaga, Gareth Pugh, and I don't know why, but I'm just really fond of Wunderkind, no matter what Joop does. I haven't really been following the fashion weeks and I'm too lazy to write anymore cuz I've only had 3 hours of sleep, so I'm in desperate need for some cruisin' and snoozin'. Nightttttt

omg omg omg I just watched the Balenciaga show on youtube (as close as i can get to da real thang) and they always have THE BEST MUSIC EVER. I love the golden filter but I don't know all their songs/remixes but ya gotta love their magic-y sound. A++++

Monster by Mistake

Although I'm not partial to American Vogue (will not read until Grace takes over, 'nuff said), I was flipping through their ever-popular September issue the other day and came across a photoshoot I quite enjoyed, "Monsters Inc." I know Oz will have a heart attack of happiness when I say that it reminded me of a photoshoot from America's Next Top Model when they modeled clothes made out of human hair (he's begun watching Australia's Next Top Model online). He might also explode of joy when I go on to say that I liked this because it was a playful take on one's childhood (he recently painted his room to look like the inside of a lego box). I definitely think this was a captivating way of shooting accessories, however, and I have gained a little more respect for Vogue.

So about 4 months ago, Toronto held its annual photography festival, Contact, and Sarah and I happened to be in the area looking after our school's art show. We came across this exhibit at the MOCA Gallery called 'The Mechanical Bride', which was inspired by Marshal McLuhan's "Mechanical Bride: The Folklore of Industrial Man" (1951). Anyways, I totally forgot about the whole thing until I randomly came across this video by Britta Thie that was shown at the gallery that was kind of interesting:

This is an excerpt from the Contact book:

"The young artist Britta Thie has sought to understand the fashion industry from the inside out through her own experiences as a model. In her video Shooting (2009), Thie plays the roles of model and photorapher/director...There is no break in the litany of directions she recites to herself as we come realize that the positioning of the camera and the monitors have subtly woven the viewer into the relationship between the photographer and model."

Sounds like a bunch of mumbo jumbo, but cool none the less (lol?). Anyways, I decided to check out this other video from the same poster, and this second video is by the same artist (I'm pretty sure?) and I just really enjoyed the voice overs too much:

I mean you could easily say that its the most pretentious thing ever (omg i have THE best idea: how about I take two pics of myself modeling, and have me voice over a convo between myself and I while I manipulate the photos on photoshop. And like I'll manipulate the photos to mimic the voice over cues like when the girl says "its nice to see you" I'll mess with here eyes!!! Im sewww brilliant ) but I dunno...it just kind of works. I'm assuming that its another piece about her experiences as a model and probably the whole not eating thing but I kinda enjoyed it just for the aesthetics, like the whole messed up face thing but thats just me...

Anyways, sorry for the lack of updates (nobody even reads this so why do I even bother?) but I'm sure Sarah would agree with me in saying that we've just been really uninspired lately but thankfully I came across something remotely blog-worthy (thanks Britta!)

Also, I'm quite sad to say that summer is nearing an end and I'm sure you'll all agree that school is gnat looking too enticing at the moment. Just the thought of starting University is giving me the willies.

So I woke up in the morning feelin' like P Diddy (I woke up feeling like a black man) and the first news I find while surfin the web? GEMMA WARD TO APPEAR IN PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN 4. I know what many of you are thinking..."wait...modeling...then acting? where have I heard of this before?" but screw y'all I don't care, I'm just glad that I'm hearing some news about her. I've actually seen some of her acting before (lets just say I REALLY watched the Black Balloon) and she's such a cutie. This is so so cute/kitsch! It's like a little injection of fun into fashion and yes...it's so freaking tacky...but in a cute kind of way. I'm really enjoying the cartoon versions of the designers (KRUNKY KARL). Cartoonized but still REALLY distinct and recognizable and I really like how the clothes are actually from the shows! Kudos to whoever came up with this!

Photos by the FUCKING AMAZING Ellen Rogers. I'm actually in awe of these. I'm not sure if the colouring is photoshopped for some of them, but I've always loved film images that have been hand-manipulated like Ellen's photos. They are so whimsical and cannot be duplicated with Photoshop. I mean, you can make some pretty amazing images with Photoshop, but I think the true craft behind photography is the process of developing film in your own unique way, like these. These are stunning. Ellen, if you ever read this, I'd like to be your BFF. Thanks.

I Really Need You Tonight

I need those gladiators in my life ASAP. Also, whats the deal with people hating on gladiators for men? I mean I googled gladiators for men hoping to see different styles etc., but instead, what I found was people talking about how girls should wear gladiators, not men. Many see them as a very feminine sandal, but I think it's quite obvious that they actually started out as shoes for men. Just like skirts and the colour pink. Skirts and gladiator sandals were being rocked hundreds of years ago by the gladiators, so what's so 'feminine' about them? I'm pretty sure while they were fighting each other, spectators wouldn't say 'omg he's so effeminate, he's wearing girl shoes!' Now I'm not saying that I wear skirts at all and I don't see anything wrong with people like Pelayo (from katelovesme) wearing them at all (I prefer more low key attire) but its quite strange how skirts have now been associated with girls more than men. And the colour pink, that was actually considered a boy's colour from the 20s-40s because it is just a shade of red, which is considered much more manly in comparison to blue, which was considered girly. Its just really interesting to see how gender assignment in clothing can change so drastically over the decades/centuries and it makes me wonder how it'll change in the near future :o (I'm not sold on heels for men yet, sorry.)
Woah K i really went off on a tangent there. Anyways where was I?

So I was on the treadmill watching tv (my mum tries to make me active), I happened to stumble across a Reitmans commercial. Now for those of you out there that aren't familiar with Reitmans, its basically a clothing store for middle aged women that is supposed to be 'practical' and comfortable. Their commercials are often parodies of fashion shows, and this time around, they decided to make a farce out of the late Alexander McQueen (I mean, the girl in the commercial gets abducted by a space ship, and the boring practical lady gets the homely guy).

Now I'm pretty biased (hint: look at the title), but I think I can see why people would find this funny. I mean, in your everyday mundane life (or at least in Toronto), you don't see many people, or any at all, that dress like this. Also, your average joe-smo isn't browsing the fashion magazine rack, though I may be generalizing (A LOT, but I do know people who don't give a hoot about fashion). I'm all for a little bit of silliness here and there because its not healthy to take things too seriously...but seriously...isn't this a little too soon? It hasn't been a year yet and people are insensitive enough to mock his work and his passion. I'd take McQueen over Reitmans ANYDAY. Nuff said.

Hey y'all! I haven't posted in a while (does anybody even read this blog???? hence the 'lol?') but typically, Sarah and I have been way2busy as of late because of school work and stressing over choosing which universities to go to. Did I mention prom's coming up in 3 weeks? No? K, well prom is coming up in 3 weeks, there I said it. Mebe you'll see pics, mebe you won't!

Anyways, lets just say that there is a prom dress group and theres WAYYYYY 2 much BCBG for my liking. I mean, come on, I know the store is 'kinda perfect for prom' because these girls are worried about owning the same brand name as every other girl at school and because the store has jussssttttt enough variation so that they aren't toooooo similar but please, spare me. I know runway dresses are most likely not even an option for high school students, but with the $400 you spend on a BCBG (not runway, herve leger, just plain ol BCBG) you could get something way cooler, and maybe even cheaper (:O).

I'm a guy, so I obviously have no experience dress shopping but is it so wrong to hold out for something different? I'm reallly borderline ranting (ok, I'm ranting) but this is just what I've observed for quite a while.

I've recently really gotten into ANTM again, not for the fashion or the models of course, but for the hilarious drama and the chance to get 'H-to-T' advice from Tyra (apparently H-To-T means head to toe in the fashion industry... and when I say receiving advice from Tyra, I'm being completely facetious.) Plus I really enjoy the crappy photography featured on the show, AND FOR THE LAST TIME NIGEL BARKER, YOU ARE NOT A FASHION PHOTOGRAPHER. PHOTOSHOP CAN ONLY GET YOU SO FAR IN LIFE.

So this week, the girls had to model THE SAME BLACK DRESS (because they couldn't afford 6 different ones...) and let me tell you, the sheep really stole the spotlight in this photoshoot. And guess who shot it?

Twas Nigel Barker who to got down n' dirty for the sake of fashion lol.

Oh and the episode before this one, was a 'hairy situation' (ha gettit they're wearing hair dresses!) Well...lets just say the photo above got 2nd place so that says a lot about the show.

Anyways, this post has been sufficiently pointless but I hope you enjoyed it as I did ranting.

Erwin Blumenfeld
I really love this film so so much! It's just so magical and its amazing how Blumenfeld created a whole new world by just simply reversing the film, or merging 2 seperate takes together. No new fangled 'FX' or 'CG' or nonsense from movies of today, just good ol ingenuity. My favourite parts are when the flowers float gently back into the woman's hair and the woman smoking in the mirror.

Rene Magritte
I first discovered Magritte for myself in grade 9 when a friend and I did a presentation on him. His works instantly grabbed my attention because they're so witty and paradoxical and he's such a technical painter. The picture above is called Le Modele Rouge and Comme des Garcon's foot shoe is very similar (only this is way cooler since they're actually feet shoes instead of feet printed shoes). The subject matter is just so absurd that I can't help but love it.

Salvador Dali / Philippe Halsman
This photograph was shown to my class by our art teacher. Yes, those are real cats, and yes, that's real water, and yes, this was all done waaaaaaaaaaay before photoshop was invented. It actually took this crew 28 takes to get this shot. And when I say crew I mean Halsman the photographer, Dali the model, Halsman's wife holding the chair, and a couple of assistants (I'm assuming 4?) hurling 3 cats and a bucket o' water. Again, this is just completely insane and I love it.

Elsa Schiaparelli
I found out about Elsa Schiaparelli almost exactly 1 year ago when we went on a trip to the AGO (Art Gallery of Ontario, and yes I know I'm extremely late in discovering her). She was friends with the surrealists (especially Dali) and that obviously had an effect on her style. The first image is her infamous skeleton dress, and the second, I'm not too sure what to call it, but if it was up to me, it would be called the 'is it a cup of roses or is it a couple leaning in for a kiss???' An interesting fact: The loser from Legally Blond (the one that gets rejected by two girls, and Elle helps him out by pretending that he's amazing at sex) is actually Schiaparelli's grandson! Who woulda thunk!

Man Ray
I don't know about you but it took me about 3 seconds to get spooked by the first photograph. Such beautiful textures going on here, gorgeous girl, the butterfly sleeves are probably the secret to hiding her arms (unless she actually is an amputee, than I apologize) and I've always been a fan of noise. Also great composition going on here so what is there not to like about this? I really enjoy the humor going on in the second photo. I mean its a naked woman, BUT NO! She's also some sort of stringed instrument! It reminds me of when you're a child and you see weird funny things in everything, like when I was a kid, I used to spot faces and bodies in trees and broccoli as giant trees in a super miniature world. I'd actually love to learn how to manipulate film and photos the old school way but I think these were done on silver gelatin plates and those are kind of extinct...

Laslo Moholy Nagy
I stumbled upon this video while researching artists from the Bauhaus, and I read about Laslo Moholy Nagy in an art textbook. This video is showing the lights created from his Light-Space Modulator. His contraption was a motor (or motors?) with different sheets of plastic, steel, and wood with various patterns cut out of them, mounted on the motor(s) and they just rotate to create an ever changing display. He used this as a tool to study light and space in order to find different uses for environmental and stage lighting. He, no doubt, in the process created something we'd all die to have in our homes because I for one would have LOVED to have had this as a child in my room as a night light.

Bjork / Ratatat
This song, I don't know why, has been a favourite of mine for a long time now. I'm absolutely head over heels in love with this song! There's something so primal and magical about it. Maybe its just me, but I've had this song on my ipod for years now and it never gets old for me. It is a little bit out there but give it a try guys!

Ok nuff French. But I will part you with the announcement that I adore Jalouse magazine. I picked up an issue in Montreal in an attempt to immerse myself in French culture and somewhat succeeded as I realized I could look at the fashion AND lire/comprendre the articles! Pas de quoi.

I watched An Education last night with ma gurlz and couldn't help but love/hate Carey Mulligan seeing as she got everything she fucking wanted in the end: going to Oxford, meeting a cute boy her age, and going back to Paris to ride her vintage bicycle in nice slacks. Kind of every girl's dream, non?

Gareth Pugh Fall 2010

Holy shit. Gareth Pugh's collection really blew me away this season. After seeing an interesting new approach from Gareth last season, when he moved from high alien drama to something more wearable (though not my fav of his collections), this collection really showed off his ability to make clothes that are not only dramatic and dark, but also chic and wearable. This is definitely one of my favourite collections by Pugh. The chevron motif was really well executed and it really complemented itself to his silhouettes, which were to DIE for by the way. Just a random note, I just love love love that silhouette that Frida Gustavsson wears in the 2nd and 4th image. I'm kind of surprised that BCBG used a silhouette like that because that's so...un-(insert my highschool) promdress-like, and btw even more surprising is that I kind of liked some of BCBG's fall collection (ewww omg).

lol now that I see it again, what do ya know? Frida Gustavsson in the same silhouette AGAIN! haha what a coinkidink. She does carry that shape quite well though...

ANYWAYS back to Pugh, I really love the leather and how clean cut and sculptural it is. It looks almost like a beatle's shell or something so its very organic but...kinda not, but it really worked out well. OH AND THE PLEATS. Wow, that must be so so hard to make because all of those pleats look so perfectly spaced and like FLAT. Usually they would kind of buckle cause its such a thick material but it looks beautiful in this collection (and I guess the people making the clothes are pros...so that helps ha). The pleated details on the boots are also really lovely and I think that errbody's gunna want a pair next winter! The chain pants are so hawt but also kind of romantic.. :S

I think Gareth has really showed off his ability to make clothes that a woman can actually wear and his proved versatility as a designer. Good job Gareth, I approve! (because the opinion of a high school student is of the utmost importance)

Alexander McQueen: The Ending of an Era in Fashion

When I heard that Alexander McQueen was dead yesterday morning, I thought it was a joke; I just really didn't want it to be true. I prayed that it was just a hoax or a false rumor going around but after going home and checking the news I just couldn't deny it any longer. I still can't take it in, it just seems so so absurd and impossible. Even my mom was upset because she knew how much I idolized him and also because she loved his imagination and creativity (I had forced her many times to watch his runway videos with me many many times). It was actually his spring 2005 collection, the first of his shows I had ever seen (I'm a late fashion bloomer) that made me fall in love with fashion.

No, I didn't cry but I admit I had a rough day (with his death and having a family member sent to the hospital) and I'm still trying to process it all. I'm just very upset that it came to this, suicide, and I know that I could never imagine the circumstances that would force anyone to choose death over life but it just seems like such a pity. I never met Alexander McQueen and I never will know him personally but we will always know him through his works and admire him for his eccentric creations and love of fashion. "But life must go on" as he said it, and it'll take some time but I'm sure it will. So R.I.P. Lee McQueen, you'll always remain a pretentious b favourite and my biggest inspiration.

Oh yess...when I said I would be posting soon, of course I meant soon...it's that lovely time again, when alllll the rtw collections come and go and make way for the pricey $tuff. HAUTE COUTURE.

ARMANI PRIVÉ

K. OMG. I really loved this collection! I love the sleekness of the first few outfits and when I saw the techno computer wierd fabric I almost died. PERFECT. My only complaint is the blatant use of the cresent moon. I know Mr. Armani was inspired by the moon but can you get more obvious than a cresent moon slapped onto the front of an outfit? I actually loled when I saw the variation of the moon that was reversed because thats barely a change. I thought it was much more tasteful and elegant when he referenced the cresent in the curves of the skirts or used in the necklaces. Overall however, I thought this collection was beautiful and ethereal and if you can afford it, totes worth it.

Before we start, lol @ the last picture. Same outfit for all the models coming out at the end? ARE YOU D&G? Did i mention this is the fall 2010 collection? Strange ya i know. Anyways...all I can say is...red. Seriously really running with the theme here and bloodstains? Really?? Not going to lie though...I kind of liked it :O. Yes its completely tacky but that particular shade of red...so friggen blunt and obnoxious and rich. I can't stand it yet I kind of love it. And I'm not sure many people could pull off such a vibrant colour in "real life". Ooh I'm not really a fan of the gowns however. That shiny material is way too balmain esque for my liking (sorry y'all)..it's a little tacky but I guess if you've gone as far as having blood on the crotch of pants for women...why the hell not? Overall, I thought this collection was ok. Some really nice military inspired wear for both men and women but thats about it. :S

Oh, and are those hunter boots I spy on the men? Oh hunters deserve a post on their own so I won't go there....yet.

ALEXIS MABILLE

Um...so basically...I'm not a fan of this collection on facebook AT ALL. Just really taking the theme too far with the "1 shoe in 1 colour, half a coat/pant in this colour, and middle part with different coloured sides". This is basically what happens when two-face from batman gives up his life of evil and joins the fashion industry. Its just so so so tacky and tasteless and please just take a look at that black dress with the yellow bows. WHAT IS THAT MONSTROSITY??? Some of that later outfits were neutral with me (which is better than hate) but I found it a bit wannabe Chanel Shanghai for my liking. And those obnoxiously coloured shoes in the 2nd last outfit KILL ME (in a bad kind of way). I'm sorry Alexis...I just really don't like this collection or your spring 2009 HC. Good luck next time?

Ugh. UGH. I feel like a lot of girls will be heading out for American Apparel to buy some shiny leggings after setting their eyes on this. I'm not going to lie. I don't like this. It's just too much shine, too much tackiness, too much ruffle, too much everything! And is that a bubble dress i spy? Geez I haven't seen one 'o those scince the early 2000s! Oh and that last picture. OMG. SILVER SUIT ALERT it looks like someone took a sheet of aluminum and went ape shit crazy. The silks used are just way too shiny and paired with the shiny embellishments and shoes and just even the cut of the dresses themselves...I'm not pleased.

Um...this is...nice. Don't get me wrong it's pretty but it's just not my aesthetic. The only outfit I kind of liked was the 3rd one which is kind of boring I know but I'm just not really into the whole referencing history thing so I'm probably not the best person to review this collection...er...awkward..

Very lovely street wear but I'm not too sure about HC. Of course the quality should be amazing and such but I find these clothes a little to lax for me. If this was an RTW collection, the look would have been more 'appropriate'. Its very h&m holiday edition magazine new year's eve outfit suggestiony with all the sequins on the blazers and skirts with t shirts and tank tops and its a little too...topshop/UO/h&m for the runway?

Behind the Curtain

This is only part 1 of the first episode of a wonderful documentary called Signé Chanel, which follows the creation of Chanel's fall 2004 Haute Couture line. The focus is on the seamstresses, and other employees working in the Paris Atelier and the ever present stresses that come with the job. I found this documentary quite amazing! I watched all four episodes on the first day of my winter break so you can tell I enjoyed it. The seamstresses are such an inspiration to me, I mean, they have to deal 'widdabawse', Karl Lagerfeld (who asked them to create 4 more dresses at the veryyyyy last moment), and their super sewing skills which I wish I possessed. This documentary shows all the resources Chanel uses, from Massaro, a shoe maker, to Madame Pouzieux, a 75 year old farmer who makes custom braids for Chanel. Its just so so so fascinating! The only thing that bothered me about this documentary was some of the treatment of the employees. I mean, I just felt horrible when Madame Pouzieux was left to find her way home from the show by herself, in a middle of a huge storm! I also felt that it was very strange when one of the seamstresses was retiring. She was introduced to Karl as "a lady who works for you", and I just found it wierd how Mr. Lagerfeld didn't even know his own seamstresses. Its just amazing how he could work with her for 40 something years, work in the same building, but not know of her at all!

but I digress...

This documentary is a MUST SEE for anyone who loves fashion and I highly recommend dis shiz!

Fractured

These amazing sculptures were created by the talented Gehard Demetz! The smooth , extremely life like faces and textures in the face and clothing are juxtaposed with the very geometric (reminds me of jenga!), deconstruction of the human form. The neutral tone is also perfect and subtle, and paired with the usage of other colours (think black, orange, red, ect.) and the realistic plastic texture POPS!, and brings us back to reality. I find it quite eerie actually, almost sinister mostly because of the violent undertones. For example, the girl with the scissors cutting her tie, or the girl being bound by the orange plastic combined with their very disturbing their smooth faces. The faces definitely show emotion, but the colour of the material itself and the smooth texture seems to neutralize their expressions but not completely. Overall, I find this collection of sculptures not only aesthetically pleasing, but powerful in terms of its execution, and concept (aka I loved it.)

I just love the intricate and delicate embellishments! So much man-power (mostly woman-power actually) went into this collection and it really shows. Oh, and just want to point out, Chinese hats are not pointed at the top, Vietnamese farmer hats are. The Chinese hats are actually supposed to be rounded at the tops. I was also a little taken aback by some of the colour selections however. I wasn't a fan of the yellow and bright blues (almost electric blue)...a little out of place/terrifying, but it wasn't enough to detract my love for this collection :)

School really sux at the moment. Tonight was one of the few free nights I've had to just sit at my computer and lose myself in a frenzy of web browsing.. the thing I love doing most. And then I remembered that I had a blog and that it was hopelessly out of date, so here I am.

I purchased the November issue of W Magazine a while ago, and I'm sad to admit that I still haven't finished reading it, the time goes straight to my grade 12 duties you see. I can't even describe how much I loved this collection, it's just so amazing! I loved how urban warrior it was, especially the vests, with all the kind of stitchy patchwork execution, I am just so down with Nicolas Ghesquiere! I also really adore those shoes! The polished 'roughness' of it is perfect. The tops of the boots look kind of like stacked bones (like some jewelery from the flinstones) only its not bone...so it's so much cooler...The song selection is really amazing too! He sure does love metronomy!

I came across this video on Dazed Digital a while ago, but it's quite groovy and very Dada (art history paper on the -isms due in a few weeks say wuttt?) so I thought I'd post about it. Also because I haven't posted since the last ice age so I figured I may as well. This video (or FILM, if you will), was made by This Is Real Art and is based on Sibling's new Collection 3, which has a slew of rad knits, all in completely different styles. They've got Breton stripes (personal fave), leopard print motifs, smiley faces... you name it. And basically I'm starting to get worried about my obsession with men's clothing. I mean, first it was Pegleg NYC... and now this? Just watch it for yourselves:

Spring things part deux

Jil Sander.

The Jil Sander is known for its neutral colours, and simple, structured silhouettes, and this collection stayed true to that for the most part. I mean like, how can anybody not like Jil Sander? I liked the experimentation with that sheer net-ish type material. There was just enough coverage to prevent a 'nip slip' from happening. I'm not sure about the dresses with the patches of fabric peeling off of them however...I found it kind of distracting. I understand that Raf Simons was all about nature for this collection, but its just not my aestetic. I also wasn't too fond of the outfits made of the shiny coloured fabric (the last 3). There were only 3 of these coloured pieces in the entire collection, so it seemed a bit awkward, and out of place (and besides, they're kinda...dare i say...distasteful?)

Aquilana.Rimondi.

I absolutely adore so many of these pieces! I don't even know where to start...I really liked the blue military jacket with the china plate gold print on it. I just really liked all the gold in general, though it is a bit garish but whatever, I haven't seen anything this flashy all season so it's forgiven.

Alexander McQueen.

I honestly don't even know where to start...This show was hypnotic! I watched it on the ShowStudio livestream, and I've been waiting for pictures to surface on style.com and here they are! First of all, those super high lobster heels, SO SICK. Kudos to all the models for not stumbling in those monsters. And the whole presentation with the live cameras doing pirouettes in the middle, very reminiscent of his robotic paint spraying arm, which I ADORED. McQueen's really been into insane technologically advanced prints lately, like in his entire spring 2009 collection and that one yellow dress with the black insect wing lace in his resort collection. I was starting to get bored of it, but this collection was crazy! I'm honestly having an internal struggle right now because this collection was so aesthetically appealing but at the same time, like I mean, its just patterns...AHHHHH! Leave it to McQueen to have me doubting myself... Anyways, all in all, this collection was just hardcore and 'sinister' and just really really cool.

BTW this reminds me of the space channel...

Giambattista Valli.

What can I say? I'm a sucker for orange...it's my favourite colour! This entire collection was really flirty and feminine, filled with lots of frillies, fringe, and fun prints (and que the leopard!) I really liked all of those frilly skirts (the orange one....the black one....the off white one...) its just so pretty! I also thought that the fringe was really fun and unexpected....and though I usually think of any type of feline print quite couger-esque, I didn't mind it here :o So this collection was just very young and pretty, and I'm sure these will do very well in the stores.

And lastly....THE DISAPPOINTMENTS.

This was so disappointing....they totally followed Jil Saunder tout de suite on that ugly peely patchy look and Prada's beach prints, but only cheap looking....Honestly I just can't talk about this anymore so onto the next disaster.

PRADA.

Not gunna lie, I absolutely adore those prints so much. Especially the blue shorts and the longer coat. The colours are just so eye catching! I also really liked those sleevless sweaters with the giant chandelier crystals. The fabric choice is just so luxurious but it looks really comfortable at the same time. Another thing that I'm just obcessed with is those chainmaille-esque crystal things in the last 2 images. I LOVE PRADA.

Flirty floral prints? It must be Erdem! This collection had plenty of spring romance packed into it. The colours are so vibrant in the first few dresses and it really catches your eye, but it can kind of be dizzying if you stare too long. What I really liked about this collection was the black dresses! So simple and elegant! I think he more successful in his outfits that used a lighter hand on the florals because they weren't too overpowering. Very girly and youthful collection overall.

I'm not going to lie. This collection was kinda 'meh'. Clearly the duo was inspired by southern belle country gals. To me it seemed a bit costumey like, "Hey girlies, lets get dolled up for the local hoe down" in other words, Hannah Montana the movie. I do have to admit though, I could see possibilities with those suede miniskirts with the fringe and studs. Very Pocahontas. I also didn't mind the knee length bloomers, they're kind of grannie cute. The boots? THANK GOD THEY WERENT FULL ON COWBOY BOOTS. I would have lost it and died. My final verdict? Hannah Montana 2 (clothing provided by d&g.)

Anyways, I'll be sure to post more on Spring '10 soon but I gotta go to work!!

I found my missing roll of film from NYC!! I'm getting the little shit developed asap, its disappearance put me through too much pain. The above photo is taken by the talented Viktor Vauthier, idol of the mo'. You can find many of his photos on this blog becuase I can't stop mentioning his lovely name.
I hope everyone's B2S experiences have been alright so far. My first week was kind of boring but I think I'll be able to handle my schedule for the rest of the year. If not then you can find me on here bitching.
Last night I watched one of Elvis Presley's many films. The film of choice: Kissin' Cousins. It was a cute little movie but I couldn't help but be disturbed by the fact that he.. kissed his cousins.. so to speak. They're supposed to be distant cousins, twice removed or some shit. But isn't that still odd? Here's a clip of him serenading the both of them:
I was however able to look past that weird incestual part because look at him.. he's gorgeous. And what's more, he had another role in this movie and played his own blonde hillbilly cousin!

I've been meaning to post about this for a while but due to my severe procrastination and distractions, have not been able to until now.
Matchstick sent us some of their new Maybelline Pulse Perfection vibrating mascaras for us to try out at the beginning of the summer, so we (excluding Oz) were pretty psyched..as you can tell from my aggressive collage above.
Needless to say, I tried it out and was duly impressed with the results. I wasn't sure if the mascara would do a good job of covering up my Aryan eyelashes, but I was surprised with how well it transformed them into the likes of bambi eyes! All I did was press the button, apply mascara as I normally would, and the soft vibrations of the wand would work their magic on my lashes. I couldn't even feel anything.
I gave a few samples for my friends to try out and this is what they said:

Katrina, 17: "Never before have my eyelashes touched my brow when I lower my head a smidge. It seperates my lashes really well. I never actually believe mascara ads and I never thought this would make a difference but it actually makes a HUGE difference and I am very pleased!!! Now I probably won't even have to curl my eyelashes before applying mascara!"

Zoe, 17: "This mascara is an awesome idea. Having the brush automatically separate your lashes evenly is a great concept. It works well and I would recommend it to my friends. The one thing that did not appeal to me was the fact that because the wand was in constant motion, my hand was unsteady and at times I felt as if I was going to poke myself in the eye. However other than that I thought the overall look after applying the mascara was clear and made my lashes look longer and more natural."

So if those testimonials don't make you want to try this stuff out, I don't know what will!

I'm not too fond of the whole, strange shaped crystal encrusted embellishments(like the belt buckle on the black dress before the wedding gown), but I love the black and white stuff with a passion.

Fancy Livin'/My week at Ryerson

Um, so went to Chicago for a few short days, and...I dig it. Seriously, their architecture makes me cry because it's so much better then ours. Only downside is it's PACKED with tourists (me) which makes it painful to go sightseeing, for example, the 'Shedd Aquarium'. I was sooo lookin' forward to that cause I love dem underwater critters, but so not worth it! Seriously, children day camp/tourists galore, how stupid of me not to have seen that coming! But even so, I think Chicago is one of my fav cities...dare I say...more then NYC?? (everyone gasps).

All I could think of was Finding Nemo...

I mean like, look at that kooky building. Cool right ya.

And this pic wasn't from Chicago...it was from a car museum on the way home.

So basically....so gunna live there one day.

oh and I realize this post has nothing to do with fashion so far, so I guess I'll have to tie something in somehow...
SO, this week I attended a one week fashion course at Ryerson University in Downtown Toronto. Twas interesting to say the least, because I had no expectations, honestly I didn't know what I would be doing down there, but I gotta say, it was kinda fun! It was strange tho, cause a lot of people were way older then my 17 years, like most 20+, and from all over the country (and one girl was from South Africa) but they were all nice. Each day ran from 9am-4pm, so 3 hours for sewing, 1 hour for lunch, and 3 hours for fashion illustration.

For the sewing, lets just say...I sucked hahahahah we were using industrial machines, silly me! I've been using a 'home sew' type of sewing machine so far!! So it took me a while to get used to its speedyness, but I can now say, I know how to use it! We learned just basics, some stuff i already knew (like simple SIMPLE stuff like darts ect.) and others, not so much (IVE NEVER SEWN GATHERED SLEEVES IN MY LIFE TIL YESTERDAY).

Fashion illustration was alright too, but it was reminiscent of life drawing at school, which I totalllllyyy sucked at. For some reason, I just can't draw naked people! Like I always draw them too fat :(, or there boobs too huge or too saggy (my drawings deflate the models' self confidence). We did like collage, learned how to represent patterns on clothes in a drawing, and some strange exercises to warm up (drawing upside down is actually not too hard once you're used to it).

My smudgy, unfinished drawing in chalk pastel. The actual dress was turquoise but I decided to gnat to go with that.

MY CONSENSUS OF RYERSON FASHION CAMP: It was ok, like we didn't do too too much but it was only a week long soo can't expect too much, but it was fun and informational which is great!

Hey all, s'been a while..
This post won't be much since I'm about to crash due to excessive amounts of working this week. But Ozzikins is supposedly working on a post or so he's telling me, so you can expect a nice juicy one from him any day now (hopefully this comment will persuade him to get a move on it). But yes, I am back from the land that never sleeps and can strangle you with its smog.. (seriously horrible air there). Nevertheless it was a great trip, got a lot of great buys (Docs for $50? Whatttt?) And I do have photos, but I friggen lost my roll of coloured film and I'm sooo depressed about it so let's not even go there. I do however have a roll of b&w and some shitty digi pics but I'll post them another day.
I recently came across this singer called Salem Al Fakir... yes it sounds like a Persian pop star but he's actually Swedish and VERY talented. I found this music video that a fan made with SIMS.. it's as good as it sounds:

I have been listening to this all summer, it's brilliant. Heck, Daniel Rossen is brilliant. He's made beautiful sounds with Grizzly Bear and Department of Eagles. And now that I've established that I ain't endin this post anytime soon, I may as well post this little gem as well:

Ironically enough, there's a picture of a big juicy orange on this zany little t-shirt. But don't kid yourselves, this is made by Pegleg NYC, the brand that I am currently obsessed with. Most of their clothing is menswear but they look unisex enough for a girl to pull off. The Pegleg NYC For Opening Ceremony collection, which is where this t-shirt is from, includes fun kitschy pieces with patterns of the star spangled banner and outdated wallpaper florals.

Speaking of the big apple, I'm headed there in a couple of days. Hoping to hit one of these places in order to complete my all-american experience. I'll be bringing several cameras so expect photos!!

Hey y'all!! Sorry about the lack of posts lately, been busy attending SUMMER SCHOOL. Yes, a brutal task, but only 3 days left and I'm free to waste my time elsewhere. And to give you a taste of my 'perfect' half summer, here's my August to-do list:

1. Firstly, and most importantly, eat then sleep. Rinse and repeat.

2. Go downtown at least once. I live in my suburban Torontonian hole for most of the year, but once in blue moon, I try to be 'adventurous'. No, I'm not that kid who used to not like downtown because he thought he would be shanked in an alleyway...

3. Watch all the TV I can.

4. Watch Harry Potter! (I still haven't seen it! I've gotten mixed reviews...suggestions?)

5. Bathe in the golden glory of the sun and feel its warmth. See, it's been super cold of late, and moody...and cloudy...and rainy... its really got my spirits down in the dumps, so all I'm asking for is 1 solid month of summer lovin'!!

6. Be a loser and be on the computer and lurk on 'thefashionspot.com' and lawl at how 'exclusive' they are. Seriously, you need an invite? WHAT? Pretentious little bitties...(oh hey dats us!)

7. Go to a pool, and take pictures with this underwater disposable camera I got for real cheap! Cliche i know..

and last but not least...

8. Attend this one week 'Fashion Intro' at Ryerson University! Its supposed to be aimed at people who are attending the Ryerson fashion program this year, but you know me! Keener... I honestly don't know what to expect, like I mean its Ryerson....but I'm hoping it'll be cool!

I must say, kinda really enjoying Mr. Gaultier's hardcore looks! They all looks so badass...i love it! The 2nd one is like old hollywood girl meets intergalactic dominatrix chick which strangely works together. And even though I'm not really a fan of Lara Stone, I must admit, her kind of 'blunt' look works here! Also, I'm not too sure about that...like boa trim tent(?) in the last one, but i really really like the leggings!!!

Ok ok ok, I admit it, not only do I have a love of chains, I also have a love of headgear/masks (k I swear its not a fetish). I love the headgear/mask stuff so much! Its a little toned-down-cdg-spring09-meets-catwoman-meets-lace. Good combo.

Well, personally I thought Alexis could've gone a bit further with this, but thats just me. Overall, its pretty and simple which is always a good thing! I dunno maybe its a bit underwhelming after laying my eyes on badass Gaultier. But don't get me wrong, I do like some of these! This is more of a spring collection because of the light feel of it, but I guess its also kinda fall-ish because of the lace :S . And the last one is a bit questionable, like when I first saw it, all I could think of was a too-long bib, or a disposable plastic raincoat :S

Well those are just some of my thoughts on a few couture collections, but I'm guessing there will be more to come...!

and I've been feeling ignored lately. I'll admit that my appearances have been lacking due to the copious amounts of school summatives that I've yet to finish and hand in. But I still exist. I still have feelings. I would still appreciate comments. Even my Polyvore is dead. It's depressing just like those siggy poses on Lookbook (y'all know what i'm talking about).
I don't really have anything interesting to report. Oz and I were talking about how Style.com made a narrow-minded review of Wunderkind F09RTW. The collection was inspired by Suprematism, a Russian art movement from the early 1900s founded by Kazimir Malevich. Emma and I did a project on this movement, so I was appalled to read that they reviewed this collection as "a strong argument that art is often better left on walls."

Did you watch The Hills last night? Well fortunately for me, I didn't catch the MTV "reality" show on Monday night but from what I hear season five is turning out to be juicier than imagined. The current season is the last season for the show's main character and former Laguna Beach gal Lauren Conrad. Although her recent attempt at fashion design was less than satisfactory by our standards here at Pretentious B, she's now trying her freshly manicured hand at writing fiction. L.C.'s new novel, L.A. Candy, is about Jane Roberts- a young woman fresh to the L.A. scene trying to make it big through reality show stardom. Sound familiar? I definitely think that L.A. Candy will a juicy reveal of what really goes on behind the scenes of The Hills and I'm definetly looking forward to tanning this summer with this juicy beach read in my hands. What do you think L.A. Candy is really about: fact or fiction?

IVE STRUCK DIAMONDZZZZ!!!

I think the best way to wake up is to the sound of a freaky hailstorm. No really. It was sooo intense cause our drainage pipe got like loose cause the hail was like the size of marbles so the front of our house started like flooding, so my parents and me are like 'ohshit!' and run outside to try and sweep the rain and ice away, and me being the smart one, grabs his flip flops to wear in the rain. IT WAS ICE WATER. lol needless to say, my toesies are still thawing haha.
